Located in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood in Philadelphia, Cecil B. Moore Recreation Center is a 102-year-old public site that encompasses one square block and includes a large physical building housing a gymnasium, kitchen, fitness space, KeySpot computer lab, and summertime and out-of-school-time programs. Local organization Beech Community Services recruited The Intersect to help lead a robust community engagement process that supports the 21st century renovations of the site.
The Intersect kicked off its community engagement efforts in 2021, with the goals of creating project awareness, building trust, and establishing buy-in that results in increased community participation with the recreation center before and after renovations are completed. The Intersect’s work includes updating local residents about the status of the project as well as introducing proposed designs for the renovations. Learnings from this process will help inform the final construction plan created by Beech and their design team about the priorities and needs of the community.
