Each year the Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby and Arts Festival brings together neighborhood residents and other art and innovation enthusiasts throughout the Philadelphia region for “one of the city’s wackiest celebrations of local flavor.” In preparation for the 2017 festival, event organizers sought help from The Intersect founder Akeem Dixon, who at the time was serving as New Kensington CDC’s director of economic development. He provided assistance with the project management, strategy development, and event planning necessary to create a high quality experience that attendees have come to expect.
The 2017 Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby and Arts Festival was a day-long celebration featuring a parade of human-powered, handmade floats that highlighted the area’s creative spirit and community pride. Attendees cheered on design ingenuity during the derby while browsing booths from 100+ local artists, food trucks, and vendors selling and displaying their arts and crafts. The free festival raised money for projects in the area while exposing people to an off-the-beaten-path section of the neighborhood.
